On Saturday the Cleveland and North Yorkshire Branch of the Yorkshire Association of Change Ringers held its annual striking competition at Kirklington. The branch includes all churches equipped with change ringing bells from Teesside in the north to Fewston in the south, from Askrig in the west to Whitby in the east. 11 teams entered split between a Sunday Service Competition for experienced teams and a Fun Competition for teams wanting to take a more light hearted approach or introduce new ringers to competition ringing. The cathedral entered two teams (Ripon A and B) in the Sunday service section both putting in very respectable performances.
As is traditional with such events there is considerable emphasis on the social side and a combination of sunshine and first class hospitality from the Kiklington ringers made for a very convivial morning renewing acquaintances with fellow bell ringers and listening to the competition ringing. Following lunch the judge and respected ringer Simon Percy from Beverley delivered his verdict. Simon initially commented on the ringing he had heard offering excellent and well delivered observations to all the teams. Then down to business and the results, we were delighted to learn that Ripon A were placed first and Ripon B fourth. Great credit should also go to the young Swainby band for winning the Fun Competition.
By winning the competition the cathedral band qualify to represent the branch in the Yorkshire Association Sunday Service competition on September 19th.
